A Typical Household System The main components of a Solar Light system are shown in the figure below. Solar panels collect sunlight and convert it into electrical energy, and a battery stores the energy produced in the daytime for use at night. Appliances consume the electricity produced. Wires are used to connect the system together, and a controller may be needed to regulate the charge on the battery. If the user wishes to use ordinary household appliances, and inverter is used to convert the battery power into alternating current (AC). Components of a typical home-based PV system. Solar DC Systems Solar DC systems provide power in the form of direct current (DC). This is delivered directly from the battery storage to the appliance using properly sized wires and fuses. The main application of the DC systems is lighting, but they can also be used for a TV or portable stereo system which has a DC input jack. DC systems can be used as the main energy source in off-grid rural areas or as a parallel power system if you are on the grid. In the latter case, additional wiring is required specifically to run the DC devices.
Solar AC Systems The AC systems are similar to the DC systems except that the electricity output is in the form of alternating current (AC). In the AC systems, the DC output from the panel is converted into AC using a device called an inverter. This allows the solar system to be connected directly with the mains wiring already in the building. It also permits the use of appliances that only receive AC inputs. Common examples of these are PCs, fax machines, some television sets, and telephone switching sets (PBX). Both the DC and AC systems can be used for primary off-grid supply, but the AC system offers more flexibility at added cost. The AC system is also better suited for standby power, and can be fitted with a change-over switch that will transfer power automatically from the mains to the solar unit when there is a power outage.
